AIA shares soar on their trading debut

Shares in the Asian unit of troubled US insurer AIG soared on their trading debut on Friday, after a monster initial public offering that could become the world's second-largest this year. AIA shares opened at 22.05 Hong Kong dollars ($A2.91), a 12 per cent rise over their IPO price of 19.68 Hong Kong dollars, underscoring heavy investor interest in the pan-Asian insurer. The strong start follows a share sale that has so far raised $US17.8 billion ($A18.23 billion) and could still top $US20 billion if AIA exercises certain options - placing the sale just behind Agricultural Bank of China's $US22.1 billion IPO in July. Advertisement: Story continues below AIA's parent had moved to list its Asian unit as part of a plan to repay US taxpayers after a government bailout in 2008. The US insurer was forced to look at publicly floating AIA in Hong Kong after the collapse in June of a proposed $US35.5 billion sale to British insurer Prudential. "This is a new beginning for AIA," Mark Tucker, the company's chief executive, told reporters at a listing ceremony in Hong Kong on Friday. "Our aim is to make sure we are the leading insurance company in Asia." Major institutional investors, Rosetta Stone Outlet including the Kuwaiti sovereign wealth fund and several Hong Kong tycoons, snapped up AIA shares. Two girlfriends of Hong Kong tycoon Joseph Lau bought a whopping 11.2 billion Hong Kong dollars worth of AIA, half the amount of shares set aside for individual investors, the English-language Standard newspaper reported on Thursday, citing unnamed sources. Lau, chairman of property developer Chinese Estates Holdings, denied through a spokesperson that the purchases were made on his behalf, the paper said. Agricultural Bank of China's IPO exceeded the previous world record set by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, which raised $US21.9 billion in 2006. Some observers have said AIA is a good bet, pointing to its reach across 15 Asian countries and the company's healthy balancesheet. The insurer booked a net profit of $US1.75 billion in 2009. But others are less convinced of AIA's growth potential, noting that it has lost market share in some countries despite being a well-known brand. "Investors are in Asia for growth. Today's AIA unfortunately doesn't measure up too well," Patricia Cheng, analyst at Hong Kong brokerage CLSA, wrote in a report this month. AIA's "influence has been declining across the board. It's already lost the top positions in China (among foreign operations), Hong Kong and Singapore".

Political presses

John Howard on the publicity trail. Photo: Getty Political memoirs have been hot property this year, none more so than John Howard's, writes Catherine Keenan. IT IS NOT surprising that 2010 has been big for political books. More has happened than in any previous year: the knifing of a first-term prime minister, the election of our first female prime minister, a radical unsettling of the two-party hold on governance. These things have happened so fast it seems only logical that people would want to read books to explain them. ''The book offers really an opportunity for more reflection and more thought,'' HarperCollins publishing director Shona Martyn says. Advertisement: Story continues below Penguin Books publishing director Bob Sessions says he's noticed a significant increase in the number of political books published this year. ''I think it's only natural, as the parties get, in people's minds, closer together, and we end up with more complicated political situations, and people get cut off in their prime and vie for leadership in a rather obvious public way.'' This has also been the year of the huge advance for political memoirs:4.6 million ($A7.1 million) for Tony Blair, $US7 million ($A7 million) for George Bush, and $400,000 for John Howard. All three books have been bestsellers. Since the success of Bill Clinton's My Life in 2004, the sky has been wide open for political memoirs. Seven out of the 10 top-selling political books in Australia this year fell into that category. Head and shoulders above all others is Howard's Lazarus Rising. It has sold 38,000 copies since the beginning of last month, and Martyn expects it to reach 50,000 this week. HarperCollins has 100,000 copies in print. It's a remarkable result, given that one of publishing's mantras is that books from the right of politics don't sell (the only other top-10 book from the right - arguably - is Malcolm Fraser: The Political Memoirs). Martyn says sales of Howard's book have been helped significantly by the author's strong six-week publicity campaign. ''We're seeing him get Rosetta Stone Chinese really big sales in discount department stores like Big W, as well as in the independent bookshops,'' Martyn says. Other political memoirs that have done well are mostly from overseas. Tony Blair's A Journey and Nelson Mandela's Conversations with Myself were second and third respectively, though selling less than a third of Howard's book. Nearly three years after publication, Barack Obama's two memoirs still outsold Jacqueline Kent's updated biography of our new Prime Minister, The Making of Julia Gillard. When it comes to politics, it seems we mostly want to hear from the politicians themselves. We want the personal voice that a biographer cannot bring (Allen and Unwin is hoping to break that rule next year, with Christine Wallace's biography of Gillard). Aside from memoirs, however, analytical books about the political landscape have sold in relatively small numbers. Straight political books rarely sell huge amounts, and the big publishing houses mostly shy away from them. Random House's only strictly political works this year were the Blair and Bush books; Harper Collins had Howard. The biggest-selling non-memoir of the year was from the small Melbourne press, Black Inc. David Marr's Quarterly Essay on Kevin Rudd, Power Trip, was a brilliantly timed portrait of the then prime minister that seemed to seal his fate. It sold just shy of 10,000 copies, significantly above the only other two analytical books to make it into the top 10: Simon Benson's Betrayal, about the shenanigans of the New South Wales Labor Party, and Barrie Cassidy's The Party Thieves, about shenanigans at a federal level. Louise Adler, at Melbourne University Press, has published many of this year's political books, including Cassidy's. ''It's driven by the tastes of the publisher, and politics is a particular passion of mine,'' she says. As a smaller house, MUP can also respond faster to the changing political climate.

A passion for interiors

OVER the years Dawn Cavanagh-Hobbs, pictured, has probably renovated 20 properties - including a farmhouse in Queniborough - and has also helped friends with their own projects. Despite that knowledge, and an interior design qualification, she still had a lot to learn when it came to creating properties with an Italian twist. She said: "Maybe I'll do a few more projects in England, but I have so many ideas for what I want to do in Le Marche. "It's so nice working with the materials over there. It was hard at the start, not speaking the language, trying to source things and negotiate prices."It's a beautiful area, but I literally drove thousands of miles sourcing the right things at the right prices, finding people I could trust and could rely on to get things done on time. "The first project was quite difficult and a little bit frustrating, but we've got a great team now. "My vision was always to create homes where when you wake up in the morning you know you are in Italy. "I pinch myself every day and think I'm so lucky to be doing something I love in a country I love." Our army at war against their female comrades

The recent events at the Australian Defence Force Academy involving the filming of a young woman as she had consensual sex are disgusting - as are the actions taken after the event by the so-called leaders of the academy (''Defence attacked in battle of sexism,'' April 7). I call on all young men and women thinking of joining the military forces to boycott the organisation until there are obvious signs that direct action has been taken to improve conditions. It simply isn't worth working for. Sexism and a macho culture predominate at the academy and throughout the Australian defence forces, as indicated by the constant reports of bullying and intimidation of young women, incidents showing young men totally out of control and the number of young males and females attempting or committing suicide. These attitudes come from the top of the military organisation, so I also call on the Defence Minister, Stephen Smith, and head of the armed forces, Angus Houston, to shave off the layer of men in the top jobs in the defence forces, including the head of the Australian Defence Force Academy, Bruce Kafer; they must be put out to pasture because their misogynist attitudes are polluting our military forces. And they must be replaced by people who don't live in the past and whose attitudes are appropriate to run today's mixed-sex forces. Advertisement: Story continues below There is obviously something very sick in the Australian military forces, especially as its leaders are known not to want women there and promote their treatment as second-class citizens. Sharon Webb Deloraine (Tas) The male defence cadets involved in the publishing and viewing of the consensual sexual act cannot complain about the woman involved going to the media concerning their actions. Their actions of filming, publishing and exhibiting the act are exactly Rosetta Stone Greek what any media involved in breaching a person's privacy would do. If they want to be part of the media industry, then they should have expected their ''work'' to be examined by their fellow media colleagues. Especially at their age, where they have grown up with the internet and know that everyone on the internet is a producer and a consumer. Luke Lake Kambah The executive group of Australian Defence Force Academy is, in my opinion, taking the coward's way out. It appears that they are encouraging the reaction from their troops. It is a disgrace and those who are on the executive should be investigated as well as those who trashed her room. And who decided to charge her the day after the incident came to light? I did 20 years with the navy and paid off as a warrant officer. I paid off in 1990. We were taught to look after our troops and my officers were good officers and they would take the appropriate action when it was required. Peter Haggarty Cranebrook As the mother of a first-year officer cadet (female) at ADFA, the wife of an officer currently serving in Afghanistan and a former media adviser to a defence minister, I have some advice for Stephen Smith: stay away from operational matters, especially during an unfolding story. Attempting to boost your ministerial profile on the back of what is clearly an emerging tragedy involving at least one very vulnerable young person is not a good look. Ditto the opposition defence spokesman, whoever he is. Michelle Schofield Queens Park When they are next handing out medals, there should be one for ''Kate'' for having the spherical objects lacking in her colleagues when it comes to exposing continued sexism at the Australian Defence Force Academy. Richard Ure Epping The bosses never wanted women in the forces. Their campaign has been covert and it continues. Bob Hall Wyoming Piddling idea appeals to those with experience Well, if it's not enough that Australia's footballers can't keep it in their pants, and our military much the same, now it seems City of Sydney is jumping on the ''boys will be boys'' bandwagon with a trial of public urinals in Sydney (''Mind your pees and queues: novel solution for bladders behaving badly,'' April 7).

Iran TV airs stoning woman's 'confession'

TEHRAN - Iran's English-language Press TV has aired footage of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a woman sentenced to death by stoning, re-enacting what it said was the murder of her husband. The broadcast on Friday came a day after reports from Germany that she had been released, with the Iranian authorities saying Mohammadi Ashtiani was still in custody and mocking Western talk of her release."The defendant's case and judicial situation have not changed and she is still in Tabriz prison. Any news of her release is a sheer lie," Tabriz prosecutor Mousa Khalilollahi told the official IRNA news agency."Every once in a while foreign media give this case massive coverage for political aims."The Press TV report, which included interviews with Mohammadi Ashtiani, her son Sajjad and lawyer Javid Houtan Kian who are also both in jail, did not give new information about the case which has sparked an international outcry. But it accused Germany-based Iranian anti-stoning activist Mina Ahadi of seeking to politicise the case in the Western media with the aim of undermining the Islamic republic.A German-based campaign group said late on Thursday that Mohammadi Ashtiani had been released along with her son and lawyer after photographs of her at her home first appeared in the media. The still photographs were taken from the television reconstruction.Mohammadi Ashtiani, a 43-year-old mother of two, was sentenced to death by two different courts in the northwestern city of Tabriz in separate trials in 2006.Her sentence to hang for her involvement in the murder of her husband was commuted to Rosetta Stone Arabica 10-year jail term by an appeals court in 2007.But a second death sentence by stoning on charges of adultery levelled over several relationships, notably with the man convicted of her husband's murder, was upheld by another appeals court the same year. The "reconstruction" aired on Friday showed Mohammadi Ashtiani repeating details of her husband's murder -- as previously described by Iranian officials -- in her home in the small town of Oskou in northwest Iran.It was the third time she had been paraded on Iranian television, but unlike previous times she appeared in a headscarf and coat instead of the head-to-toe black chador and spoke in fluent Farsi instead of the Azeri spoken in her home province of East Azarbaijan. The report also showed pictures of two German journalists jailed since October along with Mohammadi Ashtiani's son and lawyer after reportedly conducting an interview with Sajjad. Before the broadcast, the English-language satellite channel said the program "will shed light on the highways and byways of the murder."Faced with an international campaign for Mohammadi Ashtiani's release, Iran has sought to shift the focus from adultery charges to her involvement in murder.Amnesty International condemned the broadcast before it was aired. The London-based rights group said "international standards for fair trial guarantee the right not to be forced to incriminate oneself or to confess guilt.""It appears that the Iranian authorities are using the Iranian media as a tool to portray her as a dangerous criminal who deserves to be executed," Amnesty said.In an earlier televised interview in August, a woman said to be Mohammadi Ashtiani admitted a man with whom she was acquainted had offered to kill her husband and that she let him carry out the crime. And in footage aired in September, the woman denied that she was lashed in prison and tortured.

Bullfight ban will 'hurt' economy

Bullfighting is said to generate about 2.5 billion euros ($A3.65 billion) a year for the Spanish economy. Photo: AFP Catalonia's bullfighting ban will have financial costs for the region as well as for the sector, which is already struggling due to Spain's economic downturn, the industry and supporters said. Catalonia's parliament on Wednesday voted to ban bullfighting from January 1, , becoming the first region in mainland Spain to outlaw the centuries-old tradition.Cheers broke out in the assembly as the ban was approved by 68 votes in favour to 55 against and nine abstentions, while supporters and opponents of the ban both held noisy rallies outside. The bullfighting sector is now expected to try to claim hundreds of millions of euros to offset losses it says it will suffer as a result of the ban.Workers in the industry have also threatened to sue the Catalan authorities if the ban goes ahead on the grounds that it contravenes human rights legislation by denying them a means to earn a living."The ban will be economically disastrous for Catalonia, and not just because of direct losses," the head of Spanish bullfighting lobby group Mesa del Toro, Eduardo Martin Penato, told the online edition of daily newspaper Publico.Top Spanish matador El Juli said the ban "would cause big losses for an important economic sector, which provides a livelihood for many families".The bullfighting sector directly employs about 40,000 people in Spain, according to sector estimates.International accounting network BDO estimates that bullfighting generates about 2.5 billion euros ($A3.65 billion) a year for the Spanish economy Rosetta Stone Spanish (Spain) and drew 14 million spectators last year. But according to left-leaning newspaper El Pais, only about 900 major bullfights were staged across Spain last year, 350 fewer than in .The drop in the number of bullfights in Catalonia has been especially sharp. Only 16 major bullfights were held in the region in compared to 31 in 01, according to the pro-bullfighting lobby group PPDF.The motion passed on Wednesday tightens Catalonia's animal protection law to remove an exception for bullfights from a ban on killing or mistreating animals in shows, in what is the biggest ever setback to the practice in Spain.Animal rights activists campaigning under the platform "Prou!", or "Enough!" in the Catalan language, had collected 180,000 signatures on a petition calling for the assembly to decide on the ban.Their campaign won international support, with backing from celebrities including British comedian Ricky Gervais, Canadian actress Pamela Anderson and Nobel Prize-winning author JM Coetzee. But while Catalonia's arguments for banning bullfighting have focused on animal rights, many in the rest of Spain believe the push is also based on a desire among some Catalans to emphasise their distinct identity.Top Spanish bullfighter Enrique Ponce said "Catalan nationalists" had hit out against "a symbol of the identity of our country" with the decision."They are attacking the culture, traditions and history of our country," he said.Esperanza Aguirre, the conservative head of the regional government of Madrid, said the move "has nothing to do with animal abuse" and was instead aimed at "breaking the ties" between Catalonia and the rest of Spain.

Every choice has an outcome

At the moment he claims top spot on Google in a search for "SEO Australia". He works mainly with small to medium businesses and estimates that almost three-quarters of Australia's websites have little or no search-engine optimisation. "The process is not very complex, but rather meticulous," Mr Peczek says. "The whole strategy is to develop a network, kind of like a net, which can catch people from different searches looking in different areas." Every page of a website can be optimised around three or four keywords. Website text must be "Google-friendly", Mr Petryshen adds. "You must make sure it matches with the way a consumer searches. For instance, most health insurance sites refer to 'health cover' but most consumers search for 'health insurance'." Companies can also go overboard with fancy web tricks that befuddle Google's web spiders, Mr Petryshen says. "We see them all the time - sites that put up a splash page with a bit of Flash," he says. "It does heaps more damage than having a more open home page with some content. Search engines also have a hard time getting past the query strings on database driven sites, and they can't read headings if they're images rather than text. "Most of the struggles we have are with design agencies, trying to convince them of the value of search. Every choice has an outcome." This may sound familiar to followers of the "simplicity" movement in web design, spearheaded by Jakob Nielsen. "To a great extent, search-engine optimisation is a repackaging of the basic usability principles," he says. "All the fancy graphics and multimedia mean nothing to search engines, which are basically the world's most influential blind users. "For 30 years it has been one of the prime usability guidelines to speak the user's language, and this turns out to be hugely important for search-engine optimisation as well." But Fast Impressions' Mr Parfitt warns that too much keyword optimisation may spoil a website. "As much as possible Fast Impressions does the Google thing," he says. "But you can go too far Rosetta Stone French and write some really crappy copy in pursuit of some intangible PageRank benefit. If the site reads 'speed dating speed dating speed dating', it doesn't really fit with our brand, which is more funky and style oriented." Once webpages are optimised, the next step is getting good quality incoming links. One factor is simply reputation, which is why small start-ups take a lot longer to get noticed, or have to go to greater extremes. Another factor is the competition. If you're in "porn, casinos or pills", Mr Petryshen says, it's going to take a long time and a lot of work to get noticed online. Similarly, the travel and accommodation industries are now well-established and hotly contested on Google's front page. "Our recommendation is to talk to your partners, see if you can get links from their websites," he says. "Look to directories such as the Yahoo directory. You build up over time." Links can be bought, but Mr Parfitt says he quickly noticed the value of a link from a reputable media site. "We don't spend any money on directory listings," he says. "I understand some of our competitors pay to be listed on certain pages and that seems to work quite well, but there's a cost associated. "If you get a lot of exposure in the offline press and media, that's worth way more than any crappy links from dodgy dating sites. Just do good PR." Advanet's Mr Peczek says the most prized links in Australia are from sites such as the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age or the ABC (all PageRanked eight out of 10). But move cautiously. Even if a site could instantly get 10,000 incoming links, Google may recognise this as cheating and penalise the site's PageRank. Google is very sensitive to optimisation.

We didn't get down to the famous Grotta Azzurra

As she left she lent down and said, "Theline is, 'Or so very longer.' " How could they not form a bond? We entrusted our bags to a porter's trolley and walked thesteep, cobbled paths through the town's medieval passages and eastalong Via Sopramonte, past terraced rows of villas that look acrossthe water to Naples and the Amalfi coast. Hazzard's tiny apartmentrequired a climb of 75 steps from the street but opened like a blueand white balcony to the sky and sea. For us she had recommended a couple of hotels before deciding wewould be happier in the house of absent friends. Yes, we could havebeen happy there forever. "Our" home was the largest property onthe island, a generous but simple white house with a sweep ofimmaculate gardens, a church and, at the top of a hill, a Greektemple. Costanza and Salvatore, the live-in couple who care for thehouse and garden, discreetly cared for us too. Breakfast was laidout on the dining table. Freshly baked Caprese cake, dense withalmond meal and chocolate, appeared in the kitchen. Clean clothesfolded themselves. Perhaps the highlight of our visit was the Sunday morning wejoined Costanza in a strenuous walk up to the annual Mass held inthe Chiese Santa Maria del Soccorso. Built to protect sailors, thelittle church sits on the far eastern point of the island next toVilla Jovis, where Tiberius ran the Roman Empire from to ADand reputedly flung opponents off the cliffs. We left the worshippers to their prayers while we wandered theruins, wondering how Tiberius exerted despotic power from such aremote and beautiful place. We stared out Canada Goose at infinite blue vistasuntil it was time for coffee and cakes under the church's giant,sea-gazing Madonna. That afternoon a vertiginous bus ride carried us to Anacapri, the island's second town, and a chairlift took us to its highestpoint, Monte Solaro. Back on the ground, we visited Chiese SanMichele, whose floor is a lush scene of Paradise made from majolicatiles. With Greene on Capri as a guide, we found Il Rosaio, thehigh-walled house where Greene had written for 40 years. Another walk took us out of Capri along the beautiful south-eastcoast. On the winding path shared mainly with blue-green lizards,we passed wondrous rock formations and Villa Malaparte, a severelyglamorous house built on an outcrop with Mussolini's permission anddubbed "the most beautiful house in the world" by The New YorkTimes. We didn't get down to the famous Grotta Azzurra. Too many boatson weekends for us to see the luminous colour of the water, saidHazzard. We didn't swim off the tiny beaches that nestle among therocks. There are at least two excuses to return. During our short stay, Hazzard appeared comfortingly to lend aguidebook and Steegmuller's tatty straw hat or to dig wildcyclamens from the garden for her vases. We dined together atGemma's and lunched on the terrace at Trattoria le Grottelle, whereshe pointed to the cliffs below, site of a Greek temple to Athena, now marked only by an ancient inscription. We ate dishes of freshbuffalo mozzarella and tomatoes, sweet melon and prosciutto, seafood and pasta; we hunted out the Anacapri red wine, strangelyhard to find beyond Anacapri. Capri's other drink is limoncello, made each winter from theisland's huge lemons. On the day we left for Amalfi, Salvatore andCostanza brought out their sweet and potent homemade brew. Sittingin the garden with frosty glasses as the first breeze of autumnshooshed through the cypress trees, we imagined ourselves asresidents rather than brief visitors. "You'll come again," saidHazzard with a certainty we chose to believe. Destination Italy GETTING THERE Qantas flies to Rome every day with a connecting flight fromHong Kong on Cathay Pacific.

The Lin family was forced to ask Nine to remove it from its website

THE DIARY THE strange spectacle of the Channel Seven crime reporter Robert Ovadia emceeing the memorial service last Saturday for the Lin family, whose brutal murders he was also reporting on, has prompted talk about other media covering the event. The official version has Ovadia being approached to speak at the service by the Lin family lawyer, Daniel Sheen, after another television reporter, Nine's Jessica Rich, initially accepted but later changed her mind due to ''ethical concerns''. Ovadia, it has been reported, gallantly stepped in to save the day.But we hear Rich suggested herself for the role, rather than being asked. After she declined to also read a eulogy, deeming it inappropriate, she was told her services were no longer needed. Rich did not return The Diary's call. Separately, we hear the video file from the service, featuring a heartbreaking address from surviving daughter Brenda Lin, was used by Channel Nine without the family's permission. The Lin family was forced to ask Nine to remove it from its website. Ovadia's appearance might have been bizarre but it is not unprecedented. The Channel Nine reporter Damian Ryan emceed the funeral of an 18-year-old woman who died after falling from an apartment balcony when trying to escape from a rapist in Waterloo last year. A QUEER NOTION Advertisement: Story continues below Tony Abbott has been called many things in his parliamentary career, but yesterday he revealed the insult to top them all. Speaking at the launch of an anti-drugs program, How to Drug-Proof Your Kids, Abbott revealed his 18-year-old daughter had branded him a '' lame, gay, churchy loser'' when he had tried to have a quiet chat about the issue. ''Perhaps I might learn some much better communication techniques from this DVD,'' Abbott chuckled. But the joke appeared to backfire on the Opposition spokesman for families, angering a gay youth support group. The developmental manager for Twenty10, David Moutou, said ''gay'' was not synonymous with ''bad'' and was disappointed it would be repeated Rosetta Stone that way by a respected member of parliament. ''Young people in their school environment are hypersensitive to the use of words, like 'gay', with negative connotations,'' he said. ''Mr Abbott's daughter isn't just talking about gay people either, it's also about people with disabilities.'' CLUBBED TO DEATH A crisis meeting was being held last night to rescue one of the oldest and most exclusive clubs for chaps, Tattersalls Club, from impending financial ruin. The men-only dinosaur is facing extinction only a year after its 150th anniversary, with debts of $3 million to the National Australia Bank. Competitor clubs such as The Union and University Schools clubs have merged and others such as The American Club have closed, but Tattersalls - whose members have included John Alexander, Chris Anderson, Malcolm Turnbull, Tom Hughes and Neville Wran - has remained stoic in the face of declining revenue, refusing to add to its coffers by allowing the other half of the population in as members. Passing the hat around raised just $1 million, so the club was forced to ask members for permission to sell off major assets, including its Elizabeth Street headquarters, at the meeting.the meeting. BAGGING THE NATS Anthony Albanese's painful existence as a die-hard Rabbitohs fan finally paid off on the weekend when he scored a clean sweep in the tipping comp run out of the office of the federal Nationals leader, Warren Truss, by his media adviser, Paul Chamberlin. Albo scored himself the grand prize of a one-third share of the $0 pot. When Chamberlin called his office to inquire as to how the money should be delivered, the reply was: ''Just the usual National Party manner, in a brown paper bag.'' Chamberlin told The Diary he was ''going to my Fitzgerald inquiry file to see what I can find''.

Labor To Debate Same-Sex Marriage

It's been a bit of a Bizzaro World in Australian federal politics in recent weeks. First we had the opposition saying they were concerned about the human rights of vulnerable people who will be expelled to Malaysia under the asylum seeker people-swap arrangement. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and immigration spokesman Scott Morrison were borrowing the same language about compassion and protecting fragile people that me and my fellow Greens have been using for years. Then last week, an ALP backbencher, John Murphy, the Member for Reid in western Sydney, was quoted as saying ALP members who support marriage equality should join the Greens. I tweeted a hyperlink to the ''join us'' section of the Greens' website and while I appreciate the plug he gave my party, I would rather both major parties also stood up for true equality. No Australian should be treated as a second-class citizen simply because of the gender of the person they're in love with. The fight for marriage equality should be above party politics, which is a vital reason to give members of parliament a conscience vote on the matter. Mr Murphy's remarks were a backhanded compliment that demonstrated the Greens have been leading the political debate to ensure marriage equality, but it is everyday Australians who are leading the real charge for change. Mr Murphy also claimed that when MPs Rosetta Stone outlet report to the parliament on August 24 on the views of their constituents about same-sex marriage, most will say Australians are opposed to changing the Marriage Act. That act has since 04 explicitly said marriage is between a man and a woman, an amendment introduced by the former Howard government. Advertisement: Story continues below The Greens maintain, and a majority of Australians surveyed recently agreed, that it's ''inevitable'' the act will be changed and same-sex marriages will happen in Australia. We are striving to achieve it in this term of parliament. Doing so will bring Australia into line with countries such as Catholic Spain, South Africa, Canada and US states including New York, which have already changed their marriage laws. The recent celebrations in New York city by happy couples getting married shows that sky has not fallen in on those places, and it won't in Australia when the act is finally changed. The Greens have a bill before parliament to achieve this and have urged the major parties to back it. Mr Murphy also said he wanted a referendum on same-sex marriage, but there is no constitutional change required to amend the Marriage Act. It's simply a legislative change, so an enormously expensive and cumbersome referendum isn't needed. We advocate that Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott should let MPs and Senators have a free vote and the freedom to vote for what their community wants. Consenting adults should be able to marry whomever they love, and the major parties should not block a conscience vote in parliament. In the meantime, same-sex couples who want their relationships to be counted in the upcoming national population snapshot, the Census, can use the form to indicate their relationship status.

Online Degree Or College Campus

What cannot be disputed is that online degree programs are gaining popularity with students. However, with this drastic change in the education system come many concerns. The most obvious one is how online degree programs compare with those offered at physical locations. Students are concerned as to how they will be rated compared with those gained at a traditional college campus. The single most important issue is to ensure that the school you are going to work with has received proper accreditation. Avoid schools that are handing out diplomas with no accreditation attached; they are purely in it for the money and should be avoided at all costs. Generally speaking you only get what you pay for.Look for colleges that offer the same degree programs online as they do at their traditional campuses. Some will require class attendance for certain projects and labs, whilst others will allow you to take the entire course online. Employers would be reassured to know that you had gained experience of working with others whilst still studying online. Some would even consider an online degree as a bonus in the more technical fields as this would suggest greater familiarity with computers and technology.Frequently online schools require their teachers to have a Masters Degree or Doctorate in the subject they are teaching. This is good news for you because more highly trained teachers mean a better education, so look for lecturers with several years of experience in online training.A common but misinformed view is that taking courses online requires less effort and commitment than an Rosetta Stone Hindi on-campus school. Certainly the student has greater flexibility in managing the workload, but usually they have to put in the same amount of study time and effort. And of course they only have themselves to rely upon for motivation, commitment and focus.Another commonly held view is that students online do not get the experience of interacting with other students. However, colleges vary and some require attendance for labs and group projects, whilst others encourage study groups either in person or via email and chat rooms. And there are even specific websites for connecting distance-learning students to each other, which will then give you the possibility of meeting students world-wide.When being interviewed for jobs you need to be aware that whilst employers may be familiar with online schools, they may only have a limited understanding of how they work and little knowledge of the quality of education you received. Be prepared and ready for questions and able to defend your schooling choice. There are no guarantees in life, and so it is with an online degree; it will not automatically pave the way for a job. Some employers will consider it an asset, whilst others will still view it unfavourably compared with a traditional degree. Sound out business people in your desired career field to get their views and listen carefully to what they have to say. Finally, this is your choice and your decision, and having weighed up all the options only you can decide.

Pictures and Experience

A trained individual would easily be able to spot how valuable the contents of the plastic vials and bags actually are. For the scientists the samples taken from the Larsen Ice Shelf in Antarctica will fill their schedules for a long time. A college senior said that mud can tell you a lot. A group of people from a college and university was selected for the one month expedition in Antarctica that was funded by the National Science Foundation and this college senior was able to participate in it. In particular, these schools already went on a couple of research cruises before. The first part of the expedition aboard a research vessel was departing from Punta Arenas Chile in early February. On the east of the Antarctic Peninsula was the Larsen Ice Shelf where they went to which was unknown territory. According to a student, no one has ever been in that place. There was no rapid motion for the boat as they used sonar for the measurement of the ocean's depth. Video footage as well as water and sediment samples were all collected by the students and researchers from the deck. The samples they brought back will take decades to analyze. With global warming in mind, mud will be part of the conducted studies considering everything from how much water it holds to the elements comprising it. Trips like this one are once in a lifetime opportunities for the student. It gives you a taste of what it's really like said this student. A native of Scotland, she plans to study global warming in graduate school. It is during the next year when one student who agrees to spend the rest of her life on a ship will be studying at the school of Oceanography in one university. This group in particular got along with the tremendous weather conditions in the Southern Hemisphere. Upstate New York was the same way. The days were cold, but the sun which rose at 430 am and set at 930 pm was intense. Difficulty can be experienced with the brightness when you look out the window. Even without much traces of civilization, science took over 24 seven. From midnight to noon Rosetta Stone Spanish Latin or vice versa were the shifts given to the students. A group lounge was where students watched movies when they were not working, some slept on the bunk beds too. Students were still expected to abide by some regulations. If something big happens, wake the rest of the seniors. Other than go to a newly found surface volcano, a senior student needed to go to an emperor penguin as well. You don't want to sleep at all, said the Dryden native. Everybody wants to experience everything. A trip to Vega Island was the best moment for her during the trip. An enormous feat is being able to go to where a few people, about 10, have gone to in the past. The span of the trip led to five weeks of missed classes for the students. When they were on the trip schoolwork was not the main priority for not only did they carry hectic schedules but also had to deal with environmental hazards associated with their vessel. They experienced a harder time because of the ship always moving. They were not able to contact the people back home as much. As a result of close quarters and having fewer distractions the students and faculty were actually brought together. From a student came the comment of having no escape. They grew close due to the deserted location and of course the hard environment. They used coolers to transport the samples of mud and rocks back to the United States with each one carrying the necessary documents for the customs officials. Some other things a student had were 323 digital pictures and five film rolls. For a student who was part of last year's exploration, it was simply better to experience the surroundings. Capturing a moment in pictures is not as amazing. You need to be aware of your surroundings.
